Mihaylov named Bulgaria's top player

Goalkeeper Nikolay Mihaylov of Dutch club FC Twente was today voted Bulgaria's Player of the Year, beating seven-times winner Dimitar Berbatov of Manchester United in a journalists' poll.

Mihaylov, who is 23 and joined Twente from Liverpool after failing to break into the first team at Anfield, also beat off competition from Aston Villa captain Stilian Petrov. Petrov came in second, with Berbatov -- winner of the award in seven of the last nine years -- in third after personally urging journalists to support somebody else.

Mihaylov, the son of Bulgarian Football Union chief and ex-star goalkeeper Borislav Mihaylov, was recently reported by the British press as a transfer target for Tottenham Hotspur.
