South African Premiership defending champions Orlando Pirates were defeated 3-1 by Wits, suffering their fourth defeat of the season in a game dominated by missed chances.
The Soweto team were playing without their star striker Benni McCarthy who is still serving a suspension. Wits opened the scoring in the 20th minute to give the hosts a 1-0 half-time lead, before Ryan Chapman struck twice in the second period to put the Roger da Sa's men three goals up.
Pirates thought they were level in the 36th minute when Rudolf Bester blasted a shot home from a wide angle, but the goal was disallowed after Thulasizwe Mbuyane was adjudged to have been in an offside position to set up the Namibian. Defender Siyabonga Sangweni netted a late consolation goal in the 88th minute.
In day's other games, Free State Stars played out a disappointing goalless draw with Platinum Stars, after coming into the match on the back of two successive wins. Platinum Stars have been a handful for some of the top teams, but have struggled to keep up their form away from home.
"I think we did everything but score," said Free State Stars coach Steve Khompela. "But that little bit of luck was not running our way. Finally we became a little frustrated at not securing a goal and Platinum Stars defended with a lot of resolution."
Cosmos remain firmly rooted in the relegation zone after suffering yet another defeat at the hands of the blazing Arrows. The 2-0 loss saw the relegation prone team fail to register its first win since the beginning of the season.
It was not a good weekend for Johannesburg based clubs either, as Kaizer Chiefs also played to a goalless draw with Santos.
