Orlando Pirates defeated Soweto rivals Moroka Swallows 2-1 in a tense quarter-final League Cup match that saw a late second-half shoving match nearly descend into a brawl.
Both teams entered the match coming off a 1-1 draw in league play three days earlier in which Pirates managed to equalise just shy of the final whistle.
Swallows, who struck first courtesy of Luvhengo Mungomeni, looked determined not to allow a repeat of Wednesday;'s draw. However, Pirates striker Benni McCarthy, in his first match back from a hamstring injury, had other ideas, scoring in the 73rd minute and again just six minutes later.
A frustrated Bougounta Cisse got into a pushing match with McCarthy soon after, drawing both sides into a heated bout of shoving that resulted in two yellow cards for each team.
Earlier, Santos edged Platinum Stars on penalty kicks to reach the semi-finals when their match ended in a 1-1 draw after extra time. The Cape Town side, who were playing in front of a nearly empty home stadium, drilled home five penalties to Platinum Stars' three.
The last two semi-final slots will be decided tomorrow, when Jomo Cosmos face Wits University and Ajax Cape Town take on Golden Arrows.
