Klinsmann names Williams in USA squad

Jurgen Klinsmann, still seeking his first victory as USA coach, has included Germany-born Danny Williams and FIFA World Cup™ defender Oguchi Onyewu among 22 players for a pair of upcoming friendlies.

Williams, a 21-year-old midfielder for Hoffenheim, is now eligible to play for USA after certifying his citizenship with the United States consulate in Germany. The Americans, with Onyewu back in the line-up, will face Honduras on 8 October in Miami and Ecuador on 11 October in Harrison, New Jersey.

Most of the players named to the squad have been in training camp before with Klinsmann, who took over two months ago. Since then, the Americans have drawn 1-1 with Mexico and lost 1-0 to Costa Rica and Belgium.

"We would like to continue seeing our players develop through these initial couple of months," Klinsmann said. "One important thing is to see continuity in the build-up of our national team and also in the way we work as coaches.

"We'd like to see new faces as well, but we also don't want to shake up the core structure of the team too much."

Klinsmann would like to net his first triumph since replacing Bob Bradley, especially with the first stage of CONCACAF qualifying for the 2014 FIFA World Cup on the horizon in 2012.

"The results with Costa Rica and Belgium didn't work in our favour, but we saw clearly that the team started to understand what we demand from them in terms of pace, playing style and how to play," Klinsmann said.

"We are definitely on the right path, and what we now need to focus on in this get together is the eagerness to finish things off up front."

The USA squad will include Landon Donovan of the Los Angeles Galaxy, Puebla's DaMarcus Beasley, New York Red Bulls' Juan Agudelo and AZ Alkmaar's Jozy Altidore.

Meanwhile, Everton goalkeeper Tim Howard, defender Carlos Bocanegra and midfielder Maurice Edu of Rangers, Onyewu of Sporting Lisbon and Fulham midfielder Clint Dempsey are among the players back in the fold for the Americans.
