Zico appointed new Iraq coach

Brazil great Zico has been appointed the coach of Iraq on a one-year deal, the nation's football federation has confirmed.

The 58-year-old, who has previously coached Japan, Fenerbahce and CSKA Moscow, replaces Wolfgang Sidka, who was not offered a new contract.

Zico will take charge of the side with immediate effect as the Iraqis prepare for the next stage of their FIFA World Cup™ qualifying campaign.

Iraq have been drawn alongside China PR, Jordan and Singapore in Group A in the third round of qualifying, and will face the Jordanians on 2 September.
