Former Germany star Lothar Matthaus has agreed to extend his contract as Bulgaria coach until 2013, football union chief Borislav Mihaylov said today. "Matthaeus will remain national team coach for two more years," Mihaylov told journalists. The contract will be signed over the coming days, he added.
Legendary midfielder Matthaus, 50, took over the helm of Bulgaria's national football team last September and will now lead the squad in their qualifiers for the 2014 FIFA World Cup™. Bulgaria are in the European zone Group B alongside Italy, Denmark, Czech Republic, Armenia and Malta.
The team's next game is a UEFA EURO 2012 qualifier at home against England on 2 September, although Bulgaria have virtually no chance of making it to next year's event in Ukraine and Poland.
