Cleverley gets England call

Manchester United midfielder Tom Cleverley was called up into the England squad for the first time after Jack Wilshere and Michael Carrick both withdrew today from the squad to play the Netherlands in a friendly international at Wembley on Wednesday.

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger had previousy said Wilshere would not play due to an ankle injury that prevented the 19-year-old midfielder from taking any part in the Gunners' friendly defeat by Benfica on Saturday.

Cleverley's fellow United midfielder Carrick pulled out after featuring in the first half of the Premier League champions' 3-2 win over local rivals and FA Cup holders Manchester City in the Community Shield at Wembley yesterday before going off with an Achilles injury.
