Klinsmann names squad for USA debut

Newly-appointed USA national team coach Jurgen Klinsmann called upon a veteran-laden line-up Thursday for his debut next week against Mexico, saying he wants to spark competition for every position.

The former Germany star, both a FIFA World Cup™ and European Championship winner as a player, was named to the post last Friday and will guide the Americans for the first time next Wednesday in Philadelphia against their bitter rivals Mexico.

"One of the goals of the roster for this game and moving forward is to create competition at each position," Klinsmann said. "There are many players who are established as well as many players who will get opportunities.

"We want there to be a healthy contest for spots on the roster. We will get a good look at where each player is as quickly as we can during the short time in camp, and we will finish with an exciting game against Mexico."

The most interesting selection was midfielder Michael Bradley of Borussia Monchengladbach, a US stalwart and the son of fired US coach Bob Bradley, whose departure was announced a week ago on the eve of Klinsmann taking over. Bradley has scored nine goals in 59 caps.

All-time US leading scorer Landon Donovan of the Los Angeles Galaxy leads the strikers with 46 goals in 146 caps and is the only roster player to have been coached before by Klinsmann, during a 2009 loan to Bayern Munich.

Former Major League Soccer teen prodigy Freddy Adu of Benfica, Edson Buddle of Ingolstadt, DaMarcus Beasley and Puebla and Juan Agudelo of New York Red Bulls were also chosen up front.

Everton's Tim Howard was selected as goalkeeper with Carlos Bocanegra of Saint-Etienne and Steve Cherundolo of Hannover the defensive veterans. Cherundolo missed the CONCACAF Gold Cup final loss to Mexico in June due to an injury.
