Sunderland's French midfielder Steed Malbranque has signed a two-year contract with French Ligue 1 side Saint-Etienne, his new club announced.

The 31-year-old began his career at Saint-Etienne's nearby rivals Lyon before signing for English club Fulham in 2001.

The former youth international subsequently moved to English side Tottenham Hotspur in 2006 and two years later headed for Sunderland.

He becomes Saint-Etienne's sixth recruit for the new season after goalkeeper Stephane Ruffier, defenders Jean-Pascal Mignot and Paulao, midfielder Jeremy Clement and striker Florent Sinama-Pongolle.
