AZ Alkmaar have confirmed the signing of USA striker Jozy Altidore from Spanish club Villarreal. The 21-year-old has signed a four-year contract with the Eredivisie side, who become the sixth club of his career.
"For me it’s about the environment," Altidore told American newspaper the Boston Herald. "It’s really essential. I think I’m at the age where I have a lot of experience now, I’ve played in a lot of places, I’ve played against top competition around the world.
"So I think it’s important to me now to go to a place where I can put that on display. That’s what I’m going to do. That’s what I’m hoping for."
Altidore came through the ranks with New York Red Bulls of Major League Soccer before joining La Liga's Villarreal, who sent him out on loan to Xerez, Hull City and Bursaspor in Turkey. Altidore played only nine matches for Villarreal in total.
The forward has appeared 34 times for the Untied States, having scored ten goals, including two notable tallies in the USA's run to the 2011 CONCACAF Gold Cup final.
