Korea Republic international striker Shin Young-Rok is out of a seven-week coma after collapsing with a heart attack during a game and is in a stable condition, his club said today. Doctors said the 24-year-old Jeju United ace had suffered multiple organ failure during a K-League game against Daegu on 8 May.
However, he woke up from the coma on Monday at a hospital in the southern resort island of Jeju, club official Kim Jang-Yul told reporters. "His condition has been improving quickly since he regained consciousness," Kim said. "It's difficult to predict when he will come back to his normal life," he added. Shin has since been moved to a hospital in Seoul for more treatment.
Shin, who also had stints with Suwon Bluewings and Turkey's Bursaspor, took the field as a substitute in the 82nd minute but collapsed shortly after. He slipped into unconsciousness and was given cardiopulmonary resuscitation on the pitch before being rushed to hospital.
Shin represented South Korea's U-17, U-20 and U-23 teams and has also played three games for the senior side.
