Goalkeeper Eiji Kawashima's fine display saw Japan claim a goalless draw in their opening Kirin Cup game against Peru at Big Swan Stadium in Niigata.

Peru were the better side over the 90 minutes but Kawashima pulled off a number of saves to ensure coach Alberto Zaccheroni's unbeaten record remained intact.

Kashima Antlers midfielder Daigo Nishi was handed a debut while CSKA Moscow forward Keisuke Honda and Inter Milan defender Yuto Nagatomo were left on the bench.

Kawashima had to be at his best to deny Adan Balbin in the first half and produced another fine stop late on as Yoshimar Yutun was unable to beat the Japan stopper.

For Japan, Makoto Hasebe had a couple of chances and Honda fired a free-kick wide ten minutes into the second period as neither side could make the breakthrough.

Peru now meet the Czech Republic in Niigata on Saturday before Japan take on the Europeans in Yokohama on 7 June.
