Substitute Jan Polak scored in the 89th minute as Wolfsburg grabbed a crucial point in their fight against relegation with a 2-2 home draw against fellow strugglers St Pauli. Mario Mandzukic gave Wolfsburg the lead after 39 minutes. St Pauli levelled through Deniz Naki 16 minutes into the second half and went ahead when Matthias Lehmann scored 16 minutes later before Polak rescued the hosts late on.
Wolfsburg, who have collected only three points in four matches under coach Felix Magath, remained in the relegation zone, a point ahead of St Pauli. St Pauli had the first chance in the 33rd minute as Max Kruse's shot from the left was blocked by Wolfsburg keeper Diego Benaglio into the path of Charles Takyi who put the rebound wide from five yards out.
Seconds later at the other end, Diego unleashed a long-range effort which hit the left post and Markus Thorandt cleared the rebound just in front of Grafite. St Pauli came close in the 35th minute on a counter-attack with Takyi laying the ball back to Gerald Asamoah, who miss-hit his attempt.
First blood to Wolfsburg
And Wolfsburg took advantage four minutes later. Benaglio sent a long ball forward which was headed by St Pauli defender Fabian Boll but appeared to go off Diego to Mandzukic, who beat home keeper Thomas Kessler though he appeared to be offside.
The hosts equalised after 61 minutes with some fine passing. A ball from the left side went through Asamoah to Takyi and then Naki, who struck home between the legs of Benaglio. The visitors grabbed the lead after 77 minutes after Wolfsburg lost a ball in the midfield. Dennis Daube sent a long diagonal through ball to Lehmann who beat Benaglio to the far right corner.
Wolfsburg piled forward and grabbed the leveller in the 89th minute on a set piece with Polak - who came on after 52 minutes - heading home Ja-Cheol Koo's corner.
