Chen Tao scored one goal and set up another to give Tianjin Teda a 3-1 win over Shandong Luneng at Tianjin Teda Stadium in the Chinese Super League.
Chen struck first for the hosts in the 36th minute before delivering a cross for Nigerian striker Obiora Odita to double the lead two minutes later.
Li Benjian extended the lead for the home side in the 54th minute and Han Peng scored a consolation goal for Shandong 20 minutes before time.
Odita came close to breaking the deadlock mid-way through the first half, heading wide Li's cross from the right before Roda Antar's close-range header was superbly parried by Tianjin goalkeeper Zhao Yanming.
Chen put the hosts in front nine minutes before the interval, heading a perfectly-flighted free-kick from Li past goalkeeper Yang Cheng. He then delivered a ball into the path of Odita for the Nigerian to double the lead with a low shot shortly afterwards.
Shandong stepped up the pressure for the remainder of the first half but were unable to break down Tianjin's defence.
The visitors had more possession after the interval but it was the hosts who created the more meaningful chances and Li's free-kick six minutes before the hour mark beat Yang to extend their lead.
Han netted Shandong's sole reply in the 70th minute, latching onto Brazilian Manoel de Brito Filho's header to slot home from ten yards.
"The victory over Shandong boosted our confidence before the clash against Melbourne," said Tianjin's Dutch coach Arie Haan, referring to next week's AFC Champions League tie. "We also saw good teamwork in the game and we should be proud of it."
Elsewhere, Hangzhou Greentown defeated Qingdao Jonoon 1-0 at home thanks to Paulo Pezzolano's winner shortly after the break.
Just three minutes into the second period, Honduran Luis Ramirez headed Wang Song's cross into the path of Pezzolano and the Uruguayan fired past goalkeeper Liu Jun.
Finally, Shanghai Shenhua beat Shenzhen Ruby 2-0 with goals from Jiang Kun and Luis Salmeron.
