Van Marwijk recalls De Jong

Defensive midfielder Nigel de Jong was today recalled to the Netherlands squad by coach Bert van Marwijk for next Wednesday's friendly with Austria in Eindhoven.

The Manchester City player had been left out for recent matches after van Marwijk criticised him over his rough play following a challenge on Newcastle United's Hatem Ben Arfa in October that left the French international with a broken leg.

Bayern Munich's Arjen Robben was, however, overlooked by van Marwijk, who explained that the winger was "not yet at his best level" after a six-month struggle with a thigh injury sustained at last year's FIFA World Cup™.

Van Marwijk, who led his country to defeat by Spain in the FIFA World Cup final, awarded a first call-up to 20-year-old FC Utrecht midfielder Kevin Strootman.
