Kagawa in Japan for surgery

Japan forward Shinji Kagawa flew back to Tokyo today to undergo surgery on a foot injury he picked up in the Blue Samurai's AFC Asian Cup semi-final win over Korea Republic in the week.

The 21-year-old was substituted in the 87th minute of Japan's penalty shoot-out victory on Tuesday in Qatar and a scan later confirmed a broken metatarsal in his right foot.

Kagawa appeared at Tokyo's Narita airport in a wheelchair, with his right bound up. But the star player put his faith in his team mates to win the Cup when they go up against Australia in the final in Doha later Saturday.

"The team has overcome many difficult times before," Kagawa told reporters. "I'm sure they will play a great game in the final."

Kagawa joined German outfit Borussia Dortmund from J-League club Cerezo Osaka for €350,000 and has scored seven goals in 18 Bundesliga appearances but his injury will see him miss the rest of the season.
