Kyle Walker, Marc Albrighton and Stiliyan Petrov were on target for Aston Villa in a 3-1 win at Sheffield United despite suffering the dismissal of Ashley Young, while Kevin Davies and Johan Elmander spared Bolton Wanderer's blushes with a late goals in a 2-0 win against non-league York City.
Stoke City face an away trip for a replay after a 1-1 draw with Cardiff City. Michael Chopra gave the Welsh side an early lead but Tuncay Sanli responded for the Potters. Everton were comfortable 5-1 winners at Championship Scunthorpe United as Louis Saha, Jermaine Beckford, Seamus Coleman, Marouane Fellaini and Leighton Baines grabbed the goals, Michael Collins responding for the hosts at Glanford Park.
Fulham also enjoyed a comfortable victory as they beat League One Peterborough United 6-2. Diomansy Kamara helped himself to a hat-trick as Kelvin Etuhu, Zoltan Gera and Jonathan Greening also got on the scoresheet.
Wigan Athletic won 3-2 at Hull City with Mohamed Diame scoring two and youngster Callum McManaman grabbing his first senior goal, Nick Barmby's brace for Hull proving in vain. Jonathan Spector and Frederic Piquionne helped West Ham United beat Barnsley 2-0 and Matt Derbyshire bagged a brace in Birmingham City's 4-1 win at Millwall.
Middlesbrough were dumped out by League Two side Burton Albion. Boro had led through a Gary O'Neil goal but two Shaun Harrad goals in the last eight minutes sealed a 2-1 win for the home side.
Junior Hoilett got the only goal of the game to help Blackburn Rovers beat Championship leaders Queens Park Rangers 1-0 and high-flying Norwich City are also out after Jimmy Smith's header gave Leyton Orient victory at Carrow Road.
Portsmouth lost 3-1 to Brighton & Hove Albion after having striker Dave Kitson sent off for violent conduct, the League One leaders getting goals through Chris Wood, an Anthony Barnes penalty and Francisco Sandaza.
Sheffield Wednesday also caused an upset as Gary Teale, Neil Mellor and Clinton Morrison netted in a 3-0 win at Bristol City. Swansea City were 4-0 winners over Colchester United while Watford came from a goal down to beat Hartlepool 4-1 and Burnley defeated Port Vale 4-2.
Coventry City were 2-1 winners over Crystal Palace while Luke Chambers grabbed a late winner to help Nottingham Forest beat Preston North End by the same margin. Huddersfield Town claimed a straightforward 2-0 success against Dover Athletic and League Two Torquay United upset League One Carlisle United 1-0.
