Former Freiburg coach Volke Finke, currently under contract with Japanese outfit Urawa Red Diamonds, has been appointed team general manager of struggling Bundesliga club Cologne.

Finke, 62, replaces Michael Meier, who was sacked last month. "The aim is to stay in the Bundesliga, Cologne is a footballing town and the club belongs among the elite," said Finke, who begins his new job in February.

The German coach made his name at Freiburg from 1991 to 2007, leading them to promotion to the Bundesliga and to qualify for the UEFA Cup. Cologne have won just four of their opening 17 league fixtures and are currently third from bottom in the Bundesliga.
