Adelaide United missed out on the chance to go top of the A-League after they surprisingly lost 3-1 at bottom side Newcastle Jets.

The hosts went in front with just four minutes gone at EnergyAustralia Stadium when Nikolai Topor-Stanley headed home Kasey Wehrman's corner. The two combined again for Newcastle's second nine minutes later when Topor-Stanley chested down Wehrman's delivery and Marko Jesic found the back of the net.

Jesic made it 3-0 seven minutes into the second period when he was picked out by new signing Francis Jeffers and finished from inside the box. Iain Fyfe reduced the arrears in the 79th minute with a header from Cassio's free-kick but Newcastle held out to leapfrog both North Queensland Fury and Sydney FC. Adelaide remain second.

Elsewhere, Joshua Rose's double saw Central Coast Mariners reclaim third with a 3-0 win at Wellington Phoenix.

Rose opened the scoring at Westpac Stadium after 17 minutes when he forged down the left before firing into the back of the net.

Rose doubled the lead with 10 minutes remaining before Adam Kwasnik put the result beyond doubt with an 86th-minute effort.
