Ecuadorian side Emelec scored a last-gasp goal to beat Brazil's Avai 2-1 in the first leg of their last-16 tie in the Copa Sudamericana.

Despite being reduced to ten men after 70 minutes when Pedro Quinonez was sent off, the home side were left celebrating after an injury time goal from Joao Rojas. Emelec had taken the lead through an own goal from Eltinho in the 64th minute, but Marcelinho equalised six minutes later.

"We did not notice the fact of playing with ten men. We all backed each other," Rojas said. "We knew winning tonight was important and we never gave up."

Elsewhere, Goias claimed a 1-0 win over Uruguay's Penarol thanks to Rafael Moura's 22nd-minute goal. And a brace from striker Obina gave Atletico Mineiro a 2-0 triumph over Colombia's Santa Fe.
