Argentinian side Newell's Old Boys took a step towards the Copa Sudamericana quarter-finals as they hammered Bolivia's San Jose 6-0 in the first leg of the Round-of-16.

In Rosario, defender Rolando Schiavi opened the scoring early in the fifth minute by finishing a Mauricio Sperdutti corner kick after a defensive mistake. In the 26th minute, Mauro Formica fired into the back of the net near the far post to double the lead, while Schiavi made it 3-0 after a Sperdutti free-kick nine minutes later.

Marcelo Estigarribia beat San Jose goalkeeper Eloy Padilla for the fourth time 14 minutes after the interval, while Formica finished a move with Lucas Bernardi in the 61st.

In injury time, 21-year-old Daniel Salvatierra made it 6-0 with a left-foot strike to make fans celebrate wildly at the Estadio Marcelo Bielsa.

The return match will be played in Bolivian city Oruro, placed at 3,700metres above sea level, on October 21. The winners of this tie will play the reigning champions Liga Deportiva Universitaria of Ecuador or Chile's Union San Felipe in quarter-finals.
