Dominant Iran kick-off competition

West Asian Football Federation Championship defending champions Iran made a bright start to their title defence with a 3-0 win against Bahrain in their opening match of group A of this year's competition on Friday.

Iran opened the scoring after 36 minutes with a powerful header from defender Hadi Aghili, who then doubled their advantage two minutes later with another header. Mehrdad Oladi scored the third goal two minutes into the second period.

In group B, hosts Jordan were held to a 1-1 draw with Syria at King Abdulah stadium.

Abdullah Deeb gave the lead to Jordan after 13 minutes with a first-time volley but Syria levelled the scores with eight minutes remaining via a close-range header from Mohamad Al Zino.

The first round of matches continues on Saturday as Asian Cup defending champions Iraq kick off their account in group C with a match against Yemen.
