Werder Bremen's Polish international defender Sebastian Boenisch is out for the rest of 2010 after having a knee operation which is expected to keep him out for four to six months.
The 23-year-old, who has won two caps for Poland, has had the operation on his right knee, and adds to Bremen coach Thomas Schaaf's defensive woes. UEFA Champions League campaigners Werder have just four points from four games ahead of Tuesday night's Bundesliga game at Hanover and face European champions Inter Milan in their next Group A match.
Werder are also without Germany defender Per Mertesacker, who is recovering from a fractured eye-socket, and are struggling for fit defenders. Ex-Arsenal star Mikael Silvestre has been playing at left-back, but has struggled with a lack of match fitness.
