Lille defender Nicolas Plestan has signed a three-year deal with Bundesliga club Schalke.
Plestan becomes the first French player to sign for the club, who have also recruited Dutch striker Klaas-Jan Huntelaar and Spanish attacking midfielder Jose Manuel Jurado.
The Frenchman played just five times last season with Lille, but Schalke coach Felix Magath said he was not worried because Plestan had been injured for much of the year.
Plestan will be fighting for a first-team place with Christoph Metzelder, who signed this summer but who has experienced problems in the first two games of the season.
The 19-year-old spent seven years at Lille, where he played 109 games.
