Sunderland striker Darren Bent made Carlos Tevez pay for a glaring miss as his injury-time penalty saw off big-spending Manchester City 1-0 at the Stadium of Light.

Bent scored his fourth goal of the season from the penalty spot four minutes into stoppage time after being brought down by Micah Richards. But City should really have been ahead when Tevez skied over an open goal after being played in by Yaya Toure with just 16 minutes gone.

Kevin Davies and Robbie Blake struck from set-pieces as ten-man Bolton came from two down to claim a 2-2 draw in a fiery contest with Birmingham. Blues defender Roger Johnson began an eventful afternoon at the Reebok Stadium with an early opener before getting involved in an incident that saw Bolton goalkeeper Jussi Jaaskelainen sent off. Craig Gardner doubled Birmingham's lead but Davies replied with a penalty after a Johnson foul and veteran Blake levelled with a stunning free-kick.

Aston Villa won 1-0 at home to Everton with Luke Young getting the only goal early in the first half.
