Celtic defender Andreas Hinkel will be sidelined for nine months after suffering a serious knee ligament injury in training.
Hinkel ruptured the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee on Tuesday and scans showed the Germany right-back will have to undergo an operation which is set to rule him out for the rest of the season.
The 28-year-old had already been left out of Celtic's Europa League squad and would not have played against FC Utrecht in the first leg of their play-off at Parkhead on Thursday.
"Andreas will require surgery and could be out for a period of up to nine months," a statement on Celtic's website confirmed on Thursday.
"Clearly this is very sad news for Andreas and he will be receiving every support from the club."
