Australian international defender Jade North will play for Wellington Phoenix in this Australian A-League season, the club said on Friday.
North, 28, has been capped 28 times for Australia and joins the New Zealand-based club from Norwegian side Tromso. North's signing means he will reunite a defensive partnership he established with current Phoenix captain Andrew Durante when both players were at the Newcastle Jets in the A-League in 2008.
"Jade's a proven performer at elite level and not only does he have a wealth of experience but he also brings significant leadership qualities to the club, having captained the Jets," Phoenix head coach Ricki Herbert said.
Herbert said North's signing completed the bulk of recruitment for the Phoenix, with the compulsory 20 squad players on the club's books. However, he said the Phoenix may look at adding prolific Indonesian striker Bambang Pamungkas to the roster following a trial stint with the squad which begins shortly. The Phoenix commence their season against Gold Coast at home on 13 August.
