Eric Gerets has been named as the new coach of Morocco, whose hot-seat has been vacant since the sacking of Frenchman Roger Lemerre last year.

The Moroccan Football Federation (RMFF) announced that Frenchman Dominique Cuperly will be the Belgian's assistant.

Gerets will leave his current position as coach of Saudi club Al Hilal in November at the latest, after the AFC Champions League.

As a player, Gerets won 86 caps with Belgium and helped them to the 1986 FIFA World Cup Mexico semi-finals.

He also won the then UEFA European Cup with PSV in 1988.
