Christian Lell has agreed to drop a division in a bid to revive his career by moving to Hertha Berlin from Bayern Munich.
The 25-year-old struggled to impress Bayern coach Louis van Gaal last season and spent the last few months of the campaign taking time away from the game due to personal reasons.
However, he is now determined to get back in action and help Berlin return to the top flight at the first time of asking.
"I would like to contribute to ensuring Berlin fulfil their ambitions of playing a leading role in the second division next season," he said. "Berlin is a fantastic city and Hertha belong in the Bundesliga."
Lell will have a particular incentive to help Berlin bounce straight back into the top flight since the one-year contract he has signed with the club will extend automatically by two years should they be promoted.
Lell has made the move from Bayern on a free transfer after being released from the remainder of his contract by the reigning Bundesliga champions.
