Basle maintained the pressure on league leaders Young Boys after easing to a 2-0 win over Bellinzona.
Scott Chipperfield fired home the opener for the second-placed side after 45 minutes and the match was effectively over just after the hour when Ildefons Lima saw red for a foul in the area and Marco Streller fired home the resulting penalty.
The win moves Basle to within four points of Young Boys, who defeated Zurich yesterday.
Lucerne maintained their solid grasp on third place with a 2-1 win at Aarau. Goals from Hakan Yakin and Davide Chiumiento put Lucerne in control, while Aco Stojkov's 50th-minute strike for Aarau could not spark a fightback.
St. Gallen are up to fourth after an impressive 3-0 win at Neuchatel Xamax that was made possible by goals from Michael Lang, Fabian Frei and Moreno Merenda.
