Villarreal sacked their coach Ernesto Valverde following the club's 2-0 defeat at home to Osasuna, the club reported in a statement. A replacement for the 45-year-old will be announced in the "coming days", according to the club.
Villarreal's loss left the club in ninth place with 26 points with just seven wins from the 20 matches played this season.
Valverde, who previously coached Espanyol and Greek side Olympiakos, is the sixth La Liga coach to lose his job this season following coaching changes at Atletico Madrid, Almeria, Racing Santander, Real Zaragoza and Xerez.
He took over at Villarreal after Chile's Manuel Pellegrini left the club in June to manage Real Madrid.
"This was the worst since I have been here. We have lost and we have played really badly," said Valverde after today''s match.
Youth team coach Juan Carlos Garrido will take over the running of the first team in a caretaker capacity.
