Australian international defender Dean Heffernan has been released by his A-League club Central Coast Mariners to play for English League One side Huddersfield Town for the rest of the season, the club said Thursday.
With the Mariners expected to miss the A-League's finals series in February, Heffernan's move to England is a boost for his chances of selection in the Australian squad for this year's FIFA World Cup™.
Socceroos coach Pim Verbeek is keen to see players involved in matches in the months leading up to the June tournament in South Africa. Heffernan, 29, has made two appearances for Australia, the last coming in this month's AFC Asian Cup qualifier against Kuwait in Kuwait City.
He played 83 competitive matches for the Mariners, 65 of those in the Hyundai A-League, scoring ten goals.
