Zamalek forward Zaki and Al-Ahly playmaker Aboutrika, two of the stand-out players when their side won the crown in Ghana two years ago, are currently sidelined with hamstring and foot injuries respectively.
They were considered extremely doubtful for the 10-31 January tournament but the omission of Middlesbrough frontman Mido is somewhat of a surprise.
The 26-year-old, currently on loan at Zamalek, was included in the provisional squad named by coach Hassan Shehata but has missed the final cut.
Instead, Dortmund striker Mohamed Zidan will be expected to lead a fairly unfamiliar front line that includes inexperienced trio Ahmed Raouf, Al-Sayed Hamdi and Mohammad Naji.
The six-time champions are still suffering a hangover after missing out on qualification for the World Cup at the expense of arch-rivals Algeria.
They will be desperate to redeem themselves with another good showing at the continental showpiece in Angola, in which they are pooled in Group B alongside Benin, Mozambique and Nigeria, who they open their account against on 12 January.
