Los Angeles Galaxy and USA forward Landon Donovan was named the 2009 Major League Soccer's Most Valuable Player on Thursday.
Donovan, the United States' all-time leading scorer, helped the Galaxy reach Sunday's MLS Cup final, the club's first appearance in the championship match since 2005. Despite all the accolades he has earned, this is the first time Donovan has garnered the top individual award in the MLS.
Donovan scored 12 goals during the regular season, helping the Galaxy rally for the best record in the Western Conference. During the play-offs, Donovan scored twice in the Galaxy's first-round series victory over Los Angeles rivals Chivas USA, and scored a penalty in extra time against Houston in their 2-0 conference final victory last Friday.
