Gold Coast United returned to winning ways as they secured a 1-0 success over leaders Sydney at Skilled Park.
United had gone into the game looking to reverse their fortunes after two successive defeats, and they put in a spirited performance as top scorer Shane Smeltz struck in the 36th minute, heading home from Jason Culina's cross.
The win means Gold Coast stay in third place, while Sydney retain top spot after Central Coast Mariners stunned second-placed Melbourne Victory with a 4-0 win over the defending champions at Etihad Stadium.
The Mariners had managed just one win from their last six outings, but halted that form in emphatic fashion. Adam Kwasnik opened the scoring in the 15th minute when he pounced on a rebound after goalkeeper Glen Moss was unable to hold Nicky Travis' rasping drive.
Matt Simon then made it 2-0 in the 75th minute when his header deflected off Rody Vargas and landed in the back of the net.
The points were made secure when Dean Heffernan slotted home five minutes later before Nik Mrdja rounded off the scoring with his first goal of the season in the 84th minute.
