Jason Hoffman's early double helped Newcastle Jets begin the new A-League season on the right note, with a 3-2 win over Wellington Phoenix at EnergyAustralia Stadium.

Hoffman opened the scoring after 12 minutes, when Tarek Elrich knocked the ball over the top and the forward lifted it over keeper Mark Paston.

The 20-year-old then doubled the lead ten minutes later after Elrich broke down the right. Jin Song-Hyung's shot was parried by Paston, but Hoffman was on hand to poke home.

Wellington pulled a goal back in the 26th minute, when Leo Bertos's free-kick picked out an unmarked Ben Sigmund and the defender headed in from close range.

And the visitors levelled two minutes before the break when Bertos embarked on a strong run before playing in Chris Greenacre, and he slipped a finish under goalkeeper Ben Kennedy.

But Newcastle snatched the points with six minutes to go when Jason Naidovski nodded in fellow substitute Sean Rooney's cross.
