Former Asian club champions Urawa Red Diamonds posted their first win of the season at the second attempt, when they defeated FC Tokyo 3-1 in the J.League today.
The Brazilian playmaker assisted Yuki Abe for the opening goal after less than five minutes, and helped his compatriot Edmilson make it 2-0 just after half-time, before scoring himself with seven minutes remaining. FC Tokyo had drawn level in the 13th minute thanks to an own goal.
"It is important that we secured three points and won my first home game," said Urawa's new German coach Volker Finke.
"Unfortunately we were tied at 1-1 with a very disappointing goal, while FC Tokyo were playing very well. But we started to play better midway through the first half and I thought we would win if we continue like that."
AFC Champions League holders and early frontrunners Gamba Osaka were easy 4-1 winners over Jubilo Iwata, with dangerman Yasuhito Endo scoring twice in the 35th and 62nd minutes.
Vissel Kobe came back from a goal down to beat Kawasaki Frontale 2-1, while Oita Trinita squeezed past Kyoto Purple Sanga 1-0.
In other games, Nagoya Grampus were held to a disappointing goalless draw by Montedio Yamagata in heavy snow, Shimizu S-Pulse drew with Yokohama Marinos 0-0, and Kashiwa Reysol also drew, 1-1 with JEF United Chiba.
