Barcelona captain Carles Puyol has pulled out of Wednesday's international friendly between Spain and England in Seville after picking up a thigh injury over the weekend.
"The club's medical team and the Spanish Federation have been in contact and have decided that the player will be in Barcelona during the week to recover fully," Barcelona said in a statement posted on its website. "So Puyol will not participate in the international match between Spain and England."
Spain coach Vicente del Bosque did not name a replacement for Puyol. The 30-year-old picked up the injury during Barcelona's 3-1 win over Sporting Gijon on Sunday. He limped off with just 20 minutes remaining and was replaced by Sylvinho.
The win allowed Barcelona to maintain its 12-point lead atop the Spanish league with 16 matches remaining.
