Kiwi Smeltz claims top Aussie honour

Wellington Phoenix and New Zealand striker Shane Smeltz has won both major honours at the Australian A-League awards.

Smeltz was awarded the Johnny Warren Medal for player of the year at a ceremony yesterday, with the 27-year-old also winning the Golden Boot award for the A-League's leading goalscorer with 12 goals.

The former AFC Wimbledon striker, who will join new club Gold Coast United next season, beat Queensland Roar's Scottish import Charlie Miller and Adelaide United skipper Travis Dodd for the Johnny Warren Medal - an award voted by A-League players. Former Scotland international Miller was named foreign player of the year.

Adelaide United's Aurelio Vidmar was named coach of the year after a brilliant season in which he steered the Reds to the AFC Champions League final against Japan's Gamba Osaka, and a top-two spot in the A-League. Adelaide United full-back Scott Jamieson won the Rising Star Award while his team mate, Eugene Galekovic, won the Goalkeeper of the Year Award and Matthew Breeze was named Referee of the Year.
