Middlesbrough agreed to sign striker Marlon King on loan from Premier League rivals Wigan Athletic until the end of the season.
King, 28, has spent the initial months of this season on loan at another Premier League side in Hull. Meanwhile relegation-threated Boro remain optimistic about signing 23-year-old midfielder Ben Watson from second-tier Crystal Palace for a reported £2 million.
"We have an agreement with Wigan and with the lad (King) that he should join us over the weekend on a six-month loan deal until the end of the season," said Middlesbrough manager Gareth Southgate.
"Ben has been here today (Thursday), he has been having a medical and a look around," former England defender Southgate added. "We have agreed a fee with Crystal Palace and we are hopeful that we can tie the deal up by the end of the day."
Southgate also said Wigan had been given Boro's permisssion to talk to Egypt striker Mido regarding a loan move although he stressed this was entirely separate from the King deal.
