The Seattle Sounders lead Major League Soccer's Western Conference by five points after a 1-0 win over the Colorado Rapids. Clint Dempsey scored the only goal seven minutes after half-time as his side stretched their advantage over the Los Angeles Galaxy, who beat DC United in midweek and remain second after their nearest pursuers dropped points.

Real Salt Lake were held to a 1-1 draw by the San Jose Earthquakes, falling behind to Sam Cronin's goal before Javier Morales' penalty earned them a point.

And FC Dallas were beaten 1-0 by the Chicago Fire thanks to Robert Earnshaw's late goal. The Wales striker has scored in his two substitute appearances since joining the club earlier this month.

The Columbus Crew, third in the Eastern Conference, suffered a surprise 2-0 defeat to the rock-bottom Montreal Impact. Ignacio Piatti scored late in each half.

The New England Revolution won 3-0 against Toronto FC with goals from Lee Nguyen, Kelyn Rowe and Teal Bunbury while the Portland Timbers beat the Vancouver Whitecaps by the same scoreline thanks to Alvas Powell, Maximiliano Urruti and Rodney Wallace.
