DC United closed to within one point of Sporting Kansas City at the top of Major League Soccer's Eastern Conference with a 3-0 win over Toronto FC on Wednesday night.
Eddie Johnson put the hosts in front just eight minutes in before Chris Rolfe doubled the lead moments before the hour mark.
The final nail in the Toronto coffin came from one of their own with Nick Hagglund putting through his own net in the 67th minute.
Toronto sit third but are level on 26 points with both Columbus Crew and New England Revolution below them, with the latter taking a 3-0 win over Colorado Rapids.
They were helped on their way by a 10th minute own goal from Drew Moor before two goals in the space of four second-half minutes from Lee Nguyen and Kelyn Rowe settled it.
In the Western Conference, Real Salt Lake missed the chance to catch Seattle Sounders at the top of the standings as they were held to a 1-1 draw by New York Red Bulls.
Joao Plata but Salt Lake in front after 18 minutes, but Thierry Henry levelled for New York just before the hour mark.
Chicago Fire and Vancouver Whitecaps played out a goalless draw.
