A Javier Morales hat-trick helped Real Salt Lake move to within two points of the top of the Western Conference as they beat the Houston Dynamo 5-2 on Sunday.
Morales had Real 2-0 up inside 17 minutes but Mark Sherrod grabbed a goal back for the hosts before the dismissal of Servando Carrasco saw them reduced to 10 men.
Alvaro Saborio then made it 3-1 and, although Sherrod notched his second, a goal from Luke Mulholland and a Morales penalty sealed the win.
Conference leaders the Seattle Sounders had an afternoon to forget as they were hammered 5-0 by the New England Revolution.
Patrick Mullins, Teal Bunbury and a brace from Diego Fagundez had the Revolution 4-0 up at the break and Chad Marshall's own goal completed the scoring.
There was late drama in Portland as the Timbers drew 1-1 with the Los Angeles Galaxy.
Robbie Keane thought he had won it for the visitors with a 92nd minute header but Diego Valeri struck even later to share the points.
In the day's other game, Marvin Chavez scored twice as Chivas USA beat the Colorado Rapids 3-1.
Erick Torres opened the scoring before Chavez's brace and Deshorn Brown nicked a consolation for the Rapids.
