Former Croatia coach Slaven Bilic has been named the new coach of Turkish side Besiktas, the club announced on its website.

The 44-year-old, who was part of the Croatia side that reached the 1998 FIFA World Cup™ semi-finals, signed a three-year deal worth €4.8m ($6.2m USD).

Bilic takes over the reins at the Turkish side after spells with two other clubs, Hajduk Split and Lokomotiv Moskva.

Bilic, who guided Croatia to two successive UEFA EURO finals in 2008 - where they reached the quarter-finals - and 2012, takes over a club reeling after UEFA on Tuesday had barred them from the UEFA Europa League next season because of a domestic match fixing scandal dating back to the 2010/11 season.
