Paulo Sousa on Wednesday was named the new coach of Swiss champions Basel just weeks after guiding Maccabi Tel-Aviv to the Israeli title. The 43-year-old former Portuguese international, who also had spells coaching Swansea City and Queens Park Rangers in the English league as well as Hungarian outfit Videoton, signed a three-year deal with the club.

Sousa, capped 51 times and who won successive UEFA Champions League titles as a player with Juventus and then Borussia Dortmund in 1996 and 1997, replaces Murat Yakin who, despite a couple of successful seasons, left the club by mutual consent in April. Yakin led Basel, who have qualified for next season's Champions League, to two league titles and the UEFA Europa League semi finals in 2013 and quarter-finals last term.
