Basel closed the gap on Super League leaders Young Boys with a 4-3 victory at home to FC Sion.
The visitors got off to the perfect start when Arnaud Buhler gave them a sixth-minute lead and, although Frederico Almerares levelled matters in the 14th minute, Sion regained the lead seconds later thanks to Emile Mpenza.
Goals from Scott Chipperfield and a second from Almerares gave the hosts a half-time lead and Xherdan Shaqiri put them in firm control eight minutes after the restart before Alvaro Dominguez's late consolation.
Basel are three points behind Young Boys, who have a game in hand, and retain their 12-point lead over third-placed Grasshoppers who triumphed 2-1 at struggling Bellinzona.
Gurkan Sermeter's second-half equaliser looked to have given the hosts a rare point after Nassim Ben Khalifa's opener for Grasshoppers. But in a dramatic final minute which saw Bellinzona striker Fausto Rossini dismissed, Eulogio Zarate pounced to hand the visitors all three points.
Elsewhere, FC Zurich drew 1-1 against St Gallen. Johan Vonlanthen put the hosts ahead in the seventh minute but Moreno Merenda levelled for St Gallen 20 minutes later.
