Vela hits late winner, Osasuna held

Carlos Vela hit an injury-time winner as Real Sociedad jumped into a UEFA Europa League qualifying spot with a 2-1 win over Espanyol in the Spanish La Liga.

Vela's last-gap effort lifted the hosts above rivals Villarreal with four games of their season remaining, while the result means Espanyol slip to tenth place. Jhon Cordoba had put the visitors ahead in the 23rd minute but the home side equalised two minutes after the half-hour mark when a Sergio Canales shot deflected home off Espanyol defender Manuel Lanzarote.

Substitute Jonas struck an 82nd-minute equaliser as Valencia denied Osasuna a long-awaited home victory. The hosts appeared poised to snap their four-game winless streak at El Sadar stadium after Oriol Riera had put Osasuna ahead in the 19th minute. However, Jonas' late show secured a 1-1 draw and ensured Valencia avoided heading into this week's Europa League semi-final first leg at Sevilla on the back of a defeat.

Relegation-threatened Getafe remain in deep trouble after only picking up a point from a goalless draw at Levante. Cosmin Contra's side wasted two opportunities to take the lead after a positive start to the first half, but had to survive the final ten minutes of the game with ten men after Alexis Ruano was dismissed for picking up a second yellow card.

The Madrid side stay in the relegation zone, while Levante missed out on the opportunity to mathematically secure their top-flight status for another year, but have little to worry about, sitting on 41 points.
