Espanyol took all three points from their Spanish La Liga trip to La Rosaleda as they beat Malaga 2-1 on Tuesday evening.

Pizzi hit the winning goal for the Catalans with just a quarter of an hour to play. The goal restored Javier Aguirre's side's lead, with Sergio Garcia putting the visitors in front in the 32nd minute, only for Pablo Perez to equalise two minutes later.

However, the Argentinian international's evening took a turn for the worse when Perez was sent off just after Pizzi's goal. The result means Espanyol move on to 40 points and are just six points off a UEFA Europa League place, while Malaga still have some work to do before they achieve safety, remaining on 32 points.

In the day's other game, struggling Elche held high-flying Athletic Bilbao to a 0-0 draw at home but remain a point behind Malaga and just three clear of the drop zone.

Athletic's capacity to break down Elche, who had not conceded any goals in their previous five home games, was made harder by the strong wind blowing over the Martinez Valera stadium, but credit must go to Fran Escriba's men for starving the Basques of proper goalscoring chances.
