Canales struck by six-month injury

Valencia playmaker Sergio Canales is set to be sidelined for six months after suffering his second serious knee injury of the season during last night's UEFA Europa League defeat to Atletico Madrid.

Canales was replaced just before the hour mark of the semi-final second leg at the Mestalla and Valencia's medical chief Jordi Candel confirmed that he had torn the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee.

The 21-year-old Canales, who joined Valencia on loan from Real Madrid in 2011, had only recently returned to action after partially tearing the same ligament during a league match against Athletic Bilbao in October.

Valencia lost last night's match 1-0 to Atletico to tumble out of the Europa League semi-finals 5-2 on aggregate.
