Mikel San Jose endured a Basque derby to forget as his two mistakes handed Real Sociedad a 2-0 win at home to Athletic Bilbao on Sunday.

The defender's handball allowed Xabi Prieto to open the scoring from the spot in the 26th minute and he then turned a Prieto cross into his own net early in the second half. Antoine Griezmann should have doubled Sociedad's lead himself late in the first period but shot against a post with an open goal at his mercy. Victory moved Sociedad above the likes of Sevilla and Atletico Madrid into the top six.

Bilbao almost got off to a flying start, Markel Susaeta's corner in the second minute falling to San Jose, whose shot was tipped round the post by Claudio Bravo. Igor Gabilondo then shot wide for the visitors before Sociedad went ahead with their first chance. San Jose was penalised for a handball in the area and Prieto sent Gorka Iraizoz the wrong way from the spot, sending the ball low to his left.

Athletic continued to create chances and Carlos Gurpegi headed wide from another Susaeta corner. Susaeta went for goal himself just after the half-hour mark, drilling a free-kick from way out just wide before Prieto almost got his second at the other end. The 27-year-old met Griezmann's right-wing corner at the near post but glanced his header across goal and wide.

Griezmann then missed a glaring chance to double the hosts' lead in the 38th minute. Iraizoz looked set to take a routine catch but spilled the ball under Griezmann's challenge, and the ball dropped kindly for the French winger, who had an open goal in front of him. Instead of steadying himself and side-footing the ball home, he shot first time as the ball was bouncing and pulled his effort which came back off the right post.

And Bilbao almost went down the other end and equalised but Gabilondo sent his low shot wide of the far post from the right angle of the area. Four minutes into the second half and Sociedad were two up and again Prieto and San Jose were involved. Prieto sent in a dangerous low cross from the right between goalkeeper and defenders and San Jose, facing his own goal and knowing he had to cut it out, could only divert it past Iraizoz, who had no chance.

Griezmann, who was playing well, then almost made up for his earlier shocking miss as his beautifully-struck 25-yard free-kick was tipped round the post by Iraizoz. Joseba Llorente should have made the game safe for Sociedad but sent a free header over the bar.

Bravo then tipped over a 30-yard effort from Pablo Orbaiz as Bilbao continued to be frustrated. They might have pulled one back in the 89th minute but Gaizka Toquero sent his header wide to sum up their night.
